The specific type of steel used in these parts is a low carbon, re-Sulphurized, non-leaded alloy. The Sulphur (S) helps aid in the precision machining process to break up chips and creates a much easier material to machine.
This process is important for machining the counter-bore as there is a critical snap-ring groove that is used to hold the assembly together in the field. (Chip control is extremely important inside this feature.)
